The International Day of Peace provides the chance for people all over the globe to practice and honor the ideals of peace. As a Montessori school, The Boyd School embraces peace and follows D. Montessori’s philosophy on the subject. Students and staff from each of the campuses joined millions of people around the world in a celebration of harmony.
Established by a United Nation resolution in 1981, the International Day of Peace has been celebrated and commemorated each year since. Originally coinciding with the opening of the General Assembly, the date was changed on September 21 of 2002.
Dr Montessori firmly believed in the benefits of a world society and was a leader in advocacy for peace. She did not believe that peace was merely the absence of war, but rather a holistic, universal concept that required a collective effort of all people. Dr. Montessori’s belief that “establishing a lasting peace is the work of education” led to her nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize and continues to inspire to this day.
Children and staff from each of The Boyd Schools joined thousands of Montessori students all over the globe as they sang Shelly Murley’s Light A Candle For Peace.

Children at the Fairfax Campus began their International Day of Peace festival with a Peace Parade. The school was decorated with peace doves the children had made in preparation for the event. The children joined hands and made a unity circle before enjoying popsicles. The event was also the kick off to a “Pennies for Peace” campaign to raise funds to build schools in Afghanistan.

Kindergarten and Elementary students from the Reston Campus met each afternoon for a week to explore the concept of peace. The children listened to peaceful stories, used their five senses to notice peace and created their own peace booklets. They also sang, danced, |

and engaged in calming exercise such as Tai Chi and Yoga.
Each child was encouraged to think about what peace means to them personally. Peace Week concluded with a lively Peace Day Parade. Each child “planted” a wish for peace around a small “peace pole.”
